'Casual clothes (in the workplace),'
according to the Daily Mail on Monday 14th April 2001 'could
be fading as firms claim that it encourages a casual attitude
to work'.
The dress-down days, seen as a
backlash against the stuffy formality of a business suit, are
themselves facing a backlash of their own. No longer is the argument
that a relaxed dress code can pay dividends seen as valid by
many corporate bosses. A study by American Corporate Trends magazine
found that forsaking formal fashions encourages lateness (a 35%
increase), commitment to a job (down 50%) and a sloppy attitude
(an increase in customer complaints of a staggering 63%).
In Britain, Richard Wilson of the
Institute of Directors said 'When you go to work and you have
to wear a suit it encourages you to convey an image of professionalism
and puts you in a different frame of mind'.
This message is amplified in a
report by Positive Presence - an image consultancy which has
worked for companies such as HSBC and Lloyds TSB. The report
suggests that many companies and the people who work within them
'just lack the corporate image which would make them really stand
out'.
'In today's world a stylish appearance
is the global trademark of success - it symbolises a contemporary
attitude, a cutting edge approach. Casual clothes are at odds
with having a professional image at work'.
So, 'dressing for success' is the
way forward and there is no more efficient way to start the ball
rolling with a well-designed, good quality company tie and scarf.
